California was annexed by the United States, and became the 31st state on September 9th 1850.
California is the most populous state of the United States.
More than 12% of U.S. citizens live in California.
If California were a country, it would have the 35th largest population in the world.
California lies on the Pacific coast in the southwest corner of the USA.
It is bounded by fellow states Oregon, Nevada and Arizona, plus an international border with Mexico to the south.
California's diverse geography ranges from beaches to mountains to forests to deserts.
In the center of the state lies the California Central Valley, surrounded by the coastal mountain ranges in the west, the Cascade Range in the north, the Tehachapi Mountains in the south, and the Sierra Nevada to the east.
The Sierra Nevada is world famous for Yosemite Valley and Sequoia National Park.
About 1/3 of the state's total surface area is covered by forests.
California contains more forestland than any state except Alaska.
California's diversity of pine species is unmatched by any other state.
California is home to:
• the largest living organisms on Earth (giant sequoia trees),
• the tallest living things on Earth (ancient redwood trees),
• the oldest known living things in the world (Bristlecone pines as old as 4700 years),
• the lowest elevation point in North America (Badwater Flat: 282ft / 86m below sea level),
• the highest peak in the contiguous 48 states (Mount Whitney: 14505ft / 4421m).
Badwater Flat and Mount Whitney are less than 200 miles apart [322 km].
Deserts in southeast California make up about 1/4 of the state's total surface area.
The south~central desert is called the Mojave.
To the northeast of the Mojave lies Death Valley which contains Badwater Flat.
With 58 counties, and an area of 160000 mi² (411000 km²), California is the 3rd largest state in the USA.
WEATHER
California is known for its diverse climate, ranging from subarctic to Mediterranean.
California is also home to the hottest place in the Western Hemisphere, Death Valley.
Almost all of southeastern California is arid, hot desert, which can become very cold at night.
The Sierra Nevada mountains reach arctic temperatures in the winter and there are several dozen small glaciers.
California is famous for earthquakes due to a number of faults, in particular the San Andreas Fault.
It is also vulnerable to tsunamis, wildfires, landslides, and several volcanoes.
